Genna, Ethiopian Christmas

Ethiopians celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January every year for Ethiopia has its own ancient calendar. The best time to be in the country for this timeless celebration is in the town of Lalibela, home to the most spectacular rock-hewn churches and the center of many religious ceremonies.

In the run-up to Christmas, the faithful maintain 43 days of fasting which is called Tsome Nebiyat “the fasting of the prophet”, that every participant has to practice in the spirit of waiting for the birth of the Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The Ethiopian Genna or Christmas is not like the West, rather it is a communal practice and a strong manifestation of faith. You will attend the eve ceremony with the local pilgrims coming from afar to participate. The liturgical service is continuous throughout the night, the ecclesiastics dance, and the local people ululate to the drumbeat. The whole crowd handles wax candlelight, at midnight, symbolizing the birth of Jesus Christ. 

In the morning at 05 am, more people gather around the courtyard of the Virgin Mary Church to join the mas creating such a transcending religious ambiance. 

In the deep passageways, loggia, and courtyard of the churches, the pilgrims stand firm in faith throughout the night commemorating the birth of Christ, creating something that you will never foregate.
