About Ethiopia

Dissected by deep and gigantic gorges, dominated by towering mountains, bejeweled by chains of lakes, watered by majestic rivers, and studded with burning deserts and great escarpments that plunge down from its highlands, Ethiopia remains the land of outstanding beauty.

It is not just the sheer scale of its geographical contrasts which characterizes the land where the Blue Nile, the world’s largest river carved one of the deepest and most dramatic gorges, but also its ancient and medieval monuments, untouched culture and history, and the diversity of its unique flora and fauna that makes this ancient land unique place.

Ethiopia, bisected by the Great Rift Valley, is as old as time itself – its civilization represents the dawn of human evolution. It is the land of Queen of Sheba known as Makeda in Ethiopia, and of Axum and its towering Obelisks and home to the Ark of the Covenant; Lalibela home to the 11-Rock hewn churches which are protected by UNESCO, Gondar the Ethiopian medieval City known as for its dozens of crenelated castles and the land that became Christian before much of the rest of the world.

We had a wonderful couple of weeks exploring Ethiopia last November. We discovered a beautiful country with a very interesting history. Ethiopia posesses great diversity both in terms of ethnicity and landscape. From the 3.2m old fossil of “Lucy” to the mountains, the obelisks of the Axum empire, the rock-cut churches of Lalibela, the deep religious culture, the markets, the tribal communities and the overall landscape, our trip was very interesting and always surprising. A key point for us enjoying so much our trip was our guide Assefa, who was able to share his passion and knowledge for Ethiopia and its history. Assefa possesses a deep respect for the Ethiopian culture which is felt at all times. It is also very noticeable the respect that the local communities have towards him. Finally, Assefa has a great sense of humour. We can only but recommend a trip guided by Assefa to this wonderful country.

Our trip to Ethiopia was amazing and Assefa was an important reason for the great memories. The in depth knowledge, flexibility, and resourcefulness all came into play. On top of all that, the caring, warmth and bright smile were always there. Ethiopia is truly amazing and you’ll understand why when you allow Asefa to guide your journey.

I want to start by thanking Assefa (and Ethiopia Odyssey) for being one of the best guides I have ever encountered. His guidance and expertise of the wonderful country of Ethiopia were evident in the planning of our trip and showed through the way he introduced us and guided us through the beautiful sights and cultural experiences of Ethiopia! I cannot pick a favorite place, from Lalibela, to Axum, to the Omo Valley. Every place was unique to itself and rich in culture, history, and beauty. Experiencing Ethiopia with Assefa, who has such a deep love for his country, made the experience all the more special. Everything was carefully planned and organized far beyond my expectations. For me, there is no better person to travel through Ethiopia with than Assafa!

We spent 2 weeks travelling with Assefa and his excellent drivers through Lalibela, The Simien Mountains and The Bale mountains. Assefa proved to be very knowledgeable about all the birds animals and plants that we encountered and was always ready to go the extra mile in making sure that we got the very best experience possible. If you are thinking of going to Ethiopia, we would unquestionably recommend this company.

For someone who has wanted to visit Ethiopia since he was a student many years ago, our pilrimage under Assefa’s attentive and knowledgeable leadership was the perfect way to make a first trip to this extraordinarily beautiful and fascinating people and land. Assefa’s knowledge and relationships are a crucial component for real understanding and having a unique trip. I shall rely on Assefa for all my future travel to Ethiopia and shall be organising a pilgrimage for my diocese with him as soon as I can. Whether one is coming to Ethiopia on one’s own or with others, Assefa and Ethiopian Odyssey are one’s best guide and help.
