Ireechaa is an indigenous age-old celebration for Ethiopia’s Oromo People dedicated as a symbolic expression of Thanksgiving to Waaqa, the creator of all things. It is a cultural ritual for the blessings they have received from the previous year and a communal prayer event for peace and reconciliation between humans and God.
The celebration starts after the rain when more sunny weather “Birra” the Ethiopian Spring begins. The rain denies communication, traveling to visit families and moreover, in this very agriculturalist community, the event heralds the beginning of the good harvesting season, so it remains a light between the dark rainy season and the spring. Thousands gather in their traditional costume, flocking to the sacred lakes like the Hora Arsedi in Bishoftu. They place fresh-cut green grass and flowers on the water and sprinkle them on themselves and others.
This carnival-like gathering has been practiced since time immemorial.
