Timket, Ethiopian Epiphany

his is another enchanting cultural and religious festival. Timket or Epiphany represents the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan.

On the eve of Timket, the replica of the Ark of the Covenant will be taken out from each church binge covered with colorful cloths and carried on ordained priest. all the way down to the site where the baptism would take place either a pool, river or a pond water was brough to, there will be a glorious religious procession which involves an ecclesiastical dance, rattling of the sistrum, betting of the drum and the back-and-forth movement of the prayer stick by the priests.

On the day of Timket 19 or 20 Jan early morning, the Archbishop of the Diocese together with the head of the churches bless the water and sprinkle it over the people. Again, with much chanting and dancing, tabots will be brought back to their respective Churches, but some tabots will remain for 1 or 2 days.  

This tranquil religious celebration is seen nowhere in the world!
