Gonder

Ethiopia’s medieval 1st- permanent capital city was founded by Emperor Fasildes in the 1630s and became, in the ensuing periods, such a beautiful historical landmark in the Ethiopian highlands. The Royal compound (FasilGemb or building) is dominating the center of the city with its fairy-tale Castles of imposing look. The Debrebrihan Selassie church is probably the finest in Ethiopia for its frescos and this makes the city the center for the development of religious iconography in Ethiopia. The so-called Royal pool of Fasildes attracts thousands of faithful every year to celebrate Ethiopian Timket or Epiphany on January 18th, 19th and 20th.
